So what’s the best way to arrive at a win win situation?

, perhaps it’s how we define expectations from the start? If you’re not going to trust and pay what @Adriano provides, then it might be better for any salesperson to walk away.

I think ,for those who don’t know which design go with and depend on the ID’s without much input is a recipe for disaster. I did my reno with the second ID I meet, and all was sorted out in just three days ,with quote ,payment terms and project start date and finish date ,all when well with a few changes in between. All this happened during Covid 19 lurking around and those stop work order may kick in anytime in 2020 October. Every little thing that I wanted was detailed in writing and some go with pictures from the net ,and it was shown to the ID and with his expertise some was not practical and others were change to make things better.
Bottom-line is to know exactly what is needed and why.

Wow! Happy to hear that you had such a smooth experience. Not everyone have been this lucky though!

Seems like a chicken and egg problem.
I definitely understand that people should be paid for the skills and time commitment. However, skills are subjective, and how would the average consumer know whether the contractors employed by the IF are worth paying for?
For such a large sum of money, you can’t fault anyone for being too careful since it can’t be objectively measured.
Seems the best way is to build brand and reputation over time. Also show casing previous work done and getting testimonials would be helpful to gain consumer trust.
There will be folks who nitpick on each line item, and I agree you should just stop entertaining them immediately

Agree with comment from Dave, that ID skills are subjective.
Are there any real industry certifications for IDs here? I understand anyone can call themselves IDs, eventhough some are really contractors. Low barrier to entry. And boy have I seen a lot of ugly homes – which local agents will describe as having “designer deco”… !
Apart from the design and aesthetic aspects too, I’m sure we have all heard of or personally experienced many practical flaws in renovation projects.
Great article Adriano.

The ID interior designers have less process to follow as BCA has only valid the licence but have not mandate a right process for all to follow. As much as i appreciate their industry of work that is hectic and messy and times when managing all the sub contractors, it is important to select the right ID (person in fact) to manage the project.
