Hi Stacked! I am getting a new BTO flat on 4th floor facing the playground and thus thinking of doing sth to better soundproof the house. My bedroom windows are not the W1 type of windows so shouldn’t requirement PE endorsement. Have u come across anyone else who have changed their new BTO windows to say double glazed windows in order to better sound proof the house? Any idea the rough costs and timeline required?

Hey! We spoke to some contacts in the industry – assuming there is no submission required and just purely the work, it’ll be $38-42 per sf. And it’ll take about 1-2 weeks from date of measurement. We haven’t come across people changing their new BTO windows though, seems to be pretty rare!

I’m not following the details of the problem. What do you mean when you say the windows are “low” when they are floor to ceiling windows? Do you mean the individual panels don’t meet the requirement of being at least 1 meter long?

Thanks

I think it’s the length from the floor to the bottom of the window. Newer HDBs generally have three-quarter length windows or even longer.

right… details are still not clear to me. so i’m getting the 3/4 BTO windows soon and am considering changing them out in a few years to soundproofed ones, especially since i expect construction on a designated residential site just next door. how will this affect me?

if anyone can shed light on this, much appreciated!

Hi, if the only problem was windows leaking water during rain, isn’t it more cost effective to just change out the rubber/silicon window seals? Or it’s not possible at all? Thanks!

Hi Stacked, I’m looking to buy a 40-year old resale HDB flat, I am concerned about noise level and also would be intending to change the windows to better sound proof the house. Prior to my purchase, how do I check and make sure that the unit’s windows are allowed to be changed and should I check with any authorized firms prior to purchasing?

Hey Joyce, it’s best to reach out to HDB’s officers for further clarifications on this as they’d have the necessary details to advise

I live in a 5-room point block and planning to change the windows at the dining area. I too encounter a lot of problems with HDB. Telling me I need to reinstall a metal railing that was there in its original design. I need PE to certify the railing and full-height windows. Only issue I have is I already obtained approval from Town Council for a 1.2 SS railing outside at the edge of the ledge which was already installed. So I have been asking HDB why I need to reinstate a railing inside the house when there is already one out there. But they just won’t agree. I am looking for a PE to help me with this requirement from HDB. If you can sharing the firm’s detail, it will be great. Thank you.
